Office Depot Fined for Fake Malware Scans

Ars Technica is reporting that Office Depot / Office Max has been fined $35 Million for faking malware and virus scans to convince customers to buy “repair” services. The scans would indicate there were problems even when there were none, allowing their in-house repair service to charge up to $300 to repair problems that did not exist.

At Automatica, we have a policy that states that we will never do work that is unnecessary or unwanted; we feel that this sort of tactic is deeply damaging to a company’s reputation. We take our reputation very seriously, and know that our customers trust is not something to be risked.
